Pre-1946 Extension

Hawthorne

Scope: working closely with the client to provide a design with a very clear separation between social and work zones, to improve the family social spaces, to allow for future family needs, incorporate a loft, secluded deck and spiral staircase.
Challenges: existing infrastructure, traffic noise, overland flow, traditional character constraints.

It’s been 8 years since our renovation, and Esther’s design continues to serve our family exceptionally well.

From the outset, she was approachable, calm, kind, and professional—easy to work with, always receptive to our ideas, and offering thoughtful, well-considered guidance.

Her practical approach and attention to detail helped translate our needs into a home that truly works. Key spaces like the library and loft are still highlights and continue to draw compliments from visitors. As our children have grown—now finishing school—the renovation has supported us through every stage, adapting with our family.

Even a later extension to our son’s bedroom, including a loft bed built into the roof cavity, fit seamlessly into the original design. Eight years on, every part of the house is still in use and still feels right—clear evidence of a design done well.
